New robotic systems, the integration of artificial intelligence into CNC machining, and cutting-edge smart factory solutions were the highlights of the Okuma stand at JIMTOF. All the machines on the stand were connected via the IoT. This allowed visitors to experience first-hand the numerous benefits of smart manufacturing.
Okuma has introduced the next-generation robotic systems ARMROID and STANDROID for highly automated production processes.
To boost productivity in small and medium-sized enterprises, ARMROID offers automation solutions where conventional robotics would be overly complex or too expensive. This is achieved by integrating an articulated robot into the machine. Through the use of an automated cell, the robot arm can load and unload workpieces, enabling the automated production of large batches.
Costly and time-consuming staff training is not required, as the robot is operated via the machine control system. Operators can utilise its numerous functions to enhance and support the machining process. The robot also improves the machining process itself by supporting the workpiece to prevent vibrations.
With the new STANDROID system, however, Okuma is introducing an automation solution that can be added to machines. Installation is extremely straightforward: the robot is positioned in a space-saving automated cell situated next to the machine and connected to the power supply and the network cable.
Thanks to its compact design, STANDROID takes up much less space than conventional robots, making it the ideal solution for those with limited space. Here too, operators do not require any special training, as it operates in a similar way to a standard machine tool. To ensure maximum safety, a 3D simulation constantly monitors the robot’s movements in advance, guaranteeing collision-free operations.
ARMROID and STANDROID will be available in Europe in 2019.
This year’s Jimtof also saw the introduction of artificial intelligence systems for advanced diagnostics.
By incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into the control system – thanks to its deep learning capabilities and the analysis of vibration data transmitted by the machine – the following can be achieved: an accurate diagnosis of the condition of the spindle bearings, enabling manufacturers to replace them before damage occurs; real-time monitoring of drilling conditions, reducing the number of defective parts caused by broken drill bits; and minimisation of tooling costs by providing a visual representation of the cutter’s wear condition.
AI applications will be launched in Europe in 2019.
Inside the stand, all the machines were interconnected, bringing the ‘Factory of the Future’ to life: visitors were thus able to see the potential of Okuma’s Industry 4.0 solutions at first hand.
The Connect Plan smart factory solution enables close monitoring of the entire plant by connecting all the machines. The data collected reveals machine utilisation and enables manufacturers to view the operational status of the production plant on a monitor. This allows for highly effective optimisation of the production process and predictive maintenance, meaning that parts are replaced immediately before faults or defects occur, thereby reducing downtime and maintenance costs.
Another significant development is the introduction of the NET BOX suite-C, which enables manufacturers to network their own machines with those of other manufacturers.
Last but by no means least was the new MCR-S (Super) gantry machining centre, which impressed visitors with its enormous size and cutting performance.
