The wire EDM machines of the VN series feature a latest-generation numerical control system, LN3W, which makes it possible to achieve exceptional performance and high speeds while maintaining a high level of precision and efficiency in the machining process. They are fitted with linear motors that allow high-speed axis movement with a fast response to the numerical control and no wear, which is normally typical of machines using ball screws. The VN series uses ceramic for the most critical parts; its most important benefits are a low coefficient of thermal expansion, light weight, high rigidity, wear resistance and excellent electrical insulation properties. It is therefore the ideal material for building a machine that leads the field in high-quality EDM. The VN series also uses an energy-saving hydraulic system. About 70% of the electrical energy used in wire EDM is supplied to the fluid treatment system. To address this, a fluid control circuit that reduces the energy needed to drive the pumps is now included as standard. This is achieved using an inverter that controls the flow of water to the heads during machining. The result is a reduction in energy consumption of about 20% while the machine is in standby, compared with conventional models.
The Sodick VN series, under the Sodick brand, brings together the 'Enhanced Standard' linear-motor wire EDM machines VN400Q and VN600Q, designed for reliable and economical wire cutting. Travels grow from the 400 x 300 x 230 mm of the VN400Q to the 600 x 400 x 310 mm of the VN600Q, while both share the same U/V travels of 90 x 90 mm and the same maximum taper, up to 15 degrees over 120 mm. Across the range the usable wire runs from 0.1 to 0.3 mm, with speeds up to 420 mm/sec, an LN3W generator and deionised water as dielectric. The four-sided table is common to both models, while the machinable workpiece weight reaches 850 kg. In short, the series covers wire-cutting requirements ranging from more compact footprints to larger and heavier workpieces, keeping the same technological architecture.
